| Charter | Document that permitted (allowed) colonists to settle on land claimed by their ruler. |
| Persecution | The act of punishing or harassing someone. |
| Cash Crop | Products such as vegetables, fruits, livestock, or tobacco that farmers grow to sell to others. |
| Plantation | A large farm. |
| Colony | A settlement that is ruled by another country. |
| New World | A name referring to North and South America. |
| Merchant | A person who sells products (like food, spices or goods). |
