TermDefinition
Globe A round model that lets you see Earth's entire surface
Map Flat drawings of Earth usually show a portion of the surface
Latitude (also called "parallels") Lines that measure how far North or South places are from the equator. Latitude lines run East-to-West.
Equator The equator is the main line of latitude, and it divides the Earth into the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere.
Longitude (also called "meridians") The lines running North-to-South
Prime Meridian The main line of longitude, and it divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres.
Hemisphere The Earth is divided into four parts: the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western hemisphere.
Aerial Photos Photos produced by satellites enable you to see patterns on Earth's surface. They also identify patterns shown on maps.
Title (of map) A map's title tells you what the map is about (and also helps you figure out what kind of map it is.)
Key (also called a "legend") Tells you what each symbol stands for on that map.
Scale (also called "scale bar") To figure out the real distance between places.
Compass Rose A compass rose tells you directions on a map (cardinal directions and intermediate directions)
Absolute location Latitude and longitude lines cross to form a global grid. This grid is used to locate places on Earth.
Cardinal directions The main directions: North, South, East, and West.
Intermediate directions The points between the cardinal directions on the compass rose show intermediate or in-between directions.
Map Symbols Used to represent something in that place. A map symbol is anything on a map that stand for something else.
Boundary lines Boundary lines mark off where one territory lines mark off where one territory begins and another ends. Think about is as a separator between countries or states (like a fence around a yard)
