| Term | Definition |

| Globe | A round model that lets you see Earth's entire surface |
| Map | Flat drawings of Earth usually show a portion of the surface |
| Latitude (also called "parallels") | Lines that measure how far North or South places are from the equator. Latitude lines run East-to-West. |
| Equator | The equator is the main line of latitude, and it divides the Earth into the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere. |
| Longitude (also called "meridians") | The lines running North-to-South |
| Prime Meridian | The main line of longitude, and it divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western hemispheres. |
| Hemisphere | The Earth is divided into four parts: the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western hemisphere. |
| Aerial Photos | Photos produced by satellites enable you to see patterns on Earth's surface. They also identify patterns shown on maps. |
| Title (of map) | A map's title tells you what the map is about (and also helps you figure out what kind of map it is.) |
| Key (also called a "legend") | Tells you what each symbol stands for on that map. |
| Scale (also called "scale bar") | To figure out the real distance between places. |
| Compass Rose | A compass rose tells you directions on a map (cardinal directions and intermediate directions) |
| Absolute location | Latitude and longitude lines cross to form a global grid. This grid is used to locate places on Earth. |
| Cardinal directions | The main directions: North, South, East, and West. |
| Intermediate directions | The points between the cardinal directions on the compass rose show intermediate or in-between directions. |
| Map Symbols | Used to represent something in that place. A map symbol is anything on a map that stand for something else. |
| Boundary lines | Boundary lines mark off where one territory lines mark off where one territory begins and another ends. Think about is as a separator between countries or states (like a fence around a yard) |
