Late Roman Man and Nature

Cybele originated in Asia Minor (modern Turkey); worship was very extreme and bloody
Isis goddess from Egyptian pantheon. The Isis cult was originally secretive and forbidden, but became very organized as time went on. They believed Isis controlled heavenly bodies through the seasons.
Mithras seems to have come from Persia (Iran); god who created animal and plant life. His cult was for men only and was popular with soldiers and ex-slaves.
Manicheism combined religions with prophets Mani, Zoroaster, The Buddha, and Jesus Christ. Founded by Mani in Persia.
Gnosticism group of sects or religions that share the belief that the spirit is divine, but the material world (including the body) is evil, and the soul is thus in need of salvation.
Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD): Christian saint born to Pagan father and a Christian Mother; shaped the mentality of western world for centuries.
City of God written by Saint Augustine and expressed what would become an influential view of the natural world as warped and perverted by original sin.
Simeon's Stylites built a platform to stay away from sin and to be closer to god. He stayed up there for 37 years., and was considered one of the saintliest men for his time. People, even with power, came from miles away to receive advice.
