American Government Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Acquit To find not guilty of a charge.
Adjourn Suspend, as in a session of congress.
Administration The officials in the executive branch of a government and their policies and principles.
Albany Plan of Union A plan proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1754 for cooperation among the thirteen colonies but was never adopted.
Alien Foreign-born resident, or noncitizen.
Ambassador An official representative of the United States appointed by the president to represent the nation in matters of diplomacy.
Amnesty A blanket pardon offered to a group of law violators.
Anti-Federalists Those persons who opposed the ratification of the Constitution in 1787-1788.
Appellate Jurisdiction The authority of a court to review decisions of inferior (lower) courts.
Apportioned Distributed, as in seats in a legislative body.
Appropriate To assign to a particular use.
Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) Greek philosopher who viewed the lives of individual humans as linked in a social context; he wrote about various types of government and the obligations of the individual citizen.
Articles of Confederation Plan of government adopted by the Continental Congress after the American Revolution; established "a firm league of friendship" among the states but allowed few important powers to the federal government.
Assemble to gather with one another in order to express views on public matters.
At-Large Election of an officeholder by the voters of an entire governmental unit (e.g., a state or country) rather than by the voters of a district or subdivision.
Attorney General The head of the Department of Justice.
Bankruptcy The legal proceeding by which a bankrupt person's assets are distributed among those to whom he or she owes debts.
Bicameral An adjective describing a legislative body composed of two chambers.
Bill A proposed law presented to a legislative body for consideration.
