| historian | an expert who studies and records the past |
| anthropologist | a scientist who studies the cultural development of humans |
| artifact | objects created by and used by humans |
| culture | the knowledge, beliefs, customs and values of a group of people |
| excavate | to dig out and remove |
| fossil | a part or imprint of something that was once alive |
| nomad | moves frequently; a nomad lives by traveling from place to place |
| megafauna | the large animals of a particular region, habitat, or geological period |
| prehistory | before written history |
| primary source | an account of an event created by someone who took part in or witnessed the event |
| secondary source | information gathered by someone who did not take part in or witness an event |
| Paleolithic Age | humans lived as hunter/gatherers |
| Neolithic Age | humans began to farm, and build farming villages |
