Truman Doctrine United States needed to provide military and economic assistance to protect nations from communists aggression
What: Marshall Plan provide more than $15 billion to help finance rebuilding efforts in Western Europe. in addition one of the stated goals was to halt the spread communism on European continent
Why: Berlin Airlift On May 12, 1949, the soviets lifted the blockade and reopened the roads, canals, and railway routes into the western half of the city. successful first test of the containment policy
NATO a mutual defense pact aimed at containing possible soviet aggression against western Europe
Warsaw Pact A mutual defense organization that put the soviets in command of the armed forces of the member states.
Korean War In all, some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives and the peninsula is still divided today
Israeli Independence First Jewish state in 2,000 years. 5 Arab nations immediately invaded the region in what became known as the 1948 Arab-Israeli War
Military and economic aid provided to countries under threat of communism by the Truman Doctrine
Greece and Turkey The first to come under threat of communism after WW2 and needed assistance under the Truman doctrine
What: Berlin Airlift In June 1948 the Russians who wanted the city all for themselves closed all highway, railroads, and canals from western occupied Germany into western occupied Berlin
Why: Marshall Plan BY the time of the plans last year, 1952, economic growth in the countries that had received funds had surpassed pre war levels. By and Large was generally lauded for the desperately needed boost it gave Americas European allies.
Who: Truman Doctrine Greece and Turkey first, then any nation attempting to stop communist aggression
What: NATO and warsaw pact Rival military alliances, mutual defense organizations
Why: Potsdam conference (July- August 1945) Beginning of the Cold War
