| Charter | Contracts from the King that gave joint-stock companies permission to establish settlements in America |
| Joint-Stock Companies | Groups of investors who the costs and profits of creating a new settlement |
| Jamestown | The first permanent settlement in North America. Located in Virginia Established 1607 |
| John Smith | The Captain who helped Jamestown survive with strict leadership. Forced settlers to work and trade with Native Powhatans |
| John Rolfe | The person who introduced the cash crop, Tobacco, which helped Jamestown to succeed |
| Separatists | They are who wanted to separate from the church of England and practice their own beliefs |
| Persecuted | Those who experienced mistreatment for their beliefs. (typically religious beliefs) |
| Pilgrims | A group of separatists who landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in November 1620 |
| Puritans | A strict, Religious group of people that founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Their way of life was called the New England Way and it emphasized devotion to God, hard work, and responsiblity |
| The Mayflower Compact | A contract written by Pilgrims to create Rules and maintain order. ❥ Significant bc it established self-govt and majority rule |

| Patroon | A person who recieved a large lamd grant because they brought 50 settlers to America |
