Sir Walter Raleigh The person who financed the Roanoke Settlement
Roanoke The first attempted settlement in North America although it failed because of harsh weather and its settlers vanishing
Charter Contracts from the King that gave joint-stock companies permission to establish settlements in America
Joint-Stock Companies Groups of investors who the costs and profits of creating a new settlement
Jamestown The first permanent settlement in North America. Located in Virginia Established 1607
John Smith The Captain who helped Jamestown survive with strict leadership. Forced settlers to work and trade with Native Powhatans
John Rolfe The person who introduced the cash crop, Tobacco, which helped Jamestown to succeed
Separatists They are who wanted to separate from the church of England and practice their own beliefs
Persecuted Those who experienced mistreatment for their beliefs. (typically religious beliefs)
Pilgrims A group of separatists who landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts in November 1620
Puritans A strict, Religious group of people that founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Their way of life was called the New England Way and it emphasized devotion to God, hard work, and responsiblity
The Mayflower Compact A contract written by Pilgrims to create Rules and maintain order. ❥ Significant bc it established self-govt and majority rule
William Penn The Quaker who founded Pennsylvania
Duke of York The Proprietor or owner of New York
Proprietary An owner who is not the King
Patroon A person who recieved a large lamd grant because they brought 50 settlers to America
Triangular Trade Route A trade Route that had 3 stops or 3 routes
House of Burgesses The first elected law making group in the British American Colonies
