Maps and Geographic Features
| Term | Definition |

| geography | the study of the earth's surface (can include climate, countries, peoples, industries, and products) |
| title | tells what a map is about and its type |
| Legend/Key | explains meaning of symbols and colors on the map |
| scale | shows ratio of distance on map to distance on earth |
| compass rose | shows direction on map |
| latitude | imaginary horizontal lines that measure north/south |
| longitude | imaginary vertical lines that measure east/west |
| hemisphere | a half of the earth |
| continent | a large landmass surrounded by water |
| tributary | a stream or river that flows into a larger river |
| gulf/bay | part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline (gulf is bigger than a bay) |
| peninsula | a piece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides |
| plateau | an area of high, flat land |
| trade | when people buy, sell, or exchange goods and services |
| good | An item a person can buy (example: fish) |
| service | work or an action that someone pays for (example: making clothes) |
| movement | The way people, products, and information move from one place to another |
| industry | a group of businesses that provide a particular good or service |
