TermDefinition
Sectionalism Extreme loyalty to a particular region of a nation.
Factory System System of manufacturing where goods are produced in a factory by hourly workers.
Immigrants Foreigners who came to the United States to live and work.
Tariffs Tax on goods imported or brought in from other countries.
Federalism A system of government where power is divided between the national government and the states.
Nullification Refusal by a state to follow a national law.
Missouri Compromise Agreement that any state that applied for statehood above the 36'30 line would be free and any state that applied for statehood below the 36'30 line would be a slave state.
Abolitionist Person who wants to end slavery.
Nat Turner's Rebellion Rebellion led by Nat Turner where 60 whites were killed so Nat Turner was hung; further divided the slavery issue between the North and South.
Cotton Gin This invention led to a major growth in cotton production and the demand for more slaves.
Cotton is King Phrase used to describe the growing cotton society in the south after the cotton gin was invented.
Latitude Imaginary lines that are seen on a map or globe going east or west; used to help determine a location.
Longitude Imaginary lines that are seen on a map or globe going north or south; used to help determine a location.
Nullify To refuse to follow a national law.
