| Canal | Man-made waterway that allowed passengers of boats or ships inland. It also helped connect Midwest farmers to the northeast and world. |
| Cotton Gin | Farming tool that made it easier to remove seeds from cotton. |
| Fifty Four Forty or Fight | Phrase which referred to the latitude lines of the northern boundary of the Oregon territory over which England and America were arguing. |
| Hand Cart | Wagon that goods were placed in which is pushed by a person. |
| Internal Improvements | Roads, bridges, canals, and other similar projects that help make travel easier. |
| Mechanical Reaper | Farming tool that made it easier to harvest wheat. |
| Railroads | Allowed for travel year around and was comfortable for passengers. |
| Steam Boats | Could go upstream or downstream and cut traveling costs and made travel faster. |
| Steel Plow | Farming tool that made tilling up the ground much easier. |
| Trails | Used in the 1800's that made traveling west much easier for settlers. |
| Ambassador | A person sent by their government to represent their home country in a foreign nation. |
| American System | A system proposed by Henry Clay which called for the government to help with internal improvements. |
| Cumberland Highway | The first national highway which was completed in 1837 connecting Maryland to Illinois. |
| Erie Canal | A canal which connected the Great Lakes to New York. |
| First Transcontinental Railroad | A railroad that was completed in 1869 which connected the east and west coast. |
| Gadsden Purchase | A purchase named after James Gadsden in which the U.S. purchased more territory from Mexico that would eventually make up the southern part of Arizona and Mexico. |
| Guadalupe Hidalgo | A treaty which stated that the United States had won area in the present-day states of Arizona Colorado states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming. |
| Henry Clay | Was a powerful political figure during the mid 1800's. He served in Congress for several terms and even ran for President several times. |
| Industrial Revolution | A period in American (and world history) when the focus was on machines, factories, and industry. |
| James Gadsden | The ambassador who helped negotiate the treaty. |
| Lewis and Clark | Two explorers who helped create a map so that Americans would be able to migrate and settle in the territory gained from the Louisiana Purchase. |
| Lewis and Clark Expedition | An expedition consisting of a group of explorers led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark that explored western North America. |
| Mexican War | War that lasted 1 1/2 years, but was won easily by the U.S. because the U.S. had better weapons and leadership. |
| Texas | Became the 28th state after being annexed by the United States in1845. |
| Western Expansion | Government policies which helped to gain territories in the west. |

| Industry | The production of goods, such as in factories where manufacturing occurs. |
| Negotiate | To discuss something in order to reach an agreement. |
| Migration | Moving from one place to another. |
| Settle | Moving to a place that not many people live in and working to make it a place that people can live in. |
| Solemnity | A state of feeling both sad and serious. |
| Encounter | To come upon or meet something or someone. |
| Exile | A person thrown out from his or her native land who is not allowed to come back. |
| Pnuemonia | An illness caused by an inflammation of the lungs that involves coughing, difficulty breathing, and fever. |
| Martyr | A person who willingly dies for a greater cause. |
| Noble | A person of good moral character. |
| Clad | Dressed or covered. |
| Alleviate | To make something easier to experience. |
| Sympathy | To share feelings with another person, especially in sadness. |
| Unconfined | Not restricted to or held in an area. |
| Cavalcade | A formal group of people walking, on horseback, or riding in vehicles. |
| Cherokee Indians | Groups of individuals that Georgia tried to remove from the state. They later challenged the Supreme Court's decision to remove them. |
| Indian Removal Act of 1830 | A law passed by Congress to move Native Americans west of the Mississippi. |
| John L. O'Sullivan | Came up with the idea of Manifest Destiny. |
| Manifest Destiny | Idea that Americans had the right and duty to expand west. |
| Native American | Another term for American Indian. |
| President Andrew Jackson | Set the tone for removing Native Americans by not following the Supreme Court's ruling. |
| Reservation | Land owned by Native Americans which are recognized by the government. |
| Trail of Tears | Was an extremely difficult journey. About 20,000 Cherokee were forcibly moved. During their journey, 4,000 died from disease and exhaustion. |
| Worchester v. Georgia | Supreme Court case which said that the Cherokee tribe was an independent nation and was not subject to state laws. |
