| Ferdinand and Isabella | Leaders who encouraged Spain to explore other countries. |
| New World | The area of the Americas that was explored during the Age of Exploration. |
| Americas | Also known as the New World, where present day America and Canada are located. |
| Astrolabe | Technology that uses the stars and planets to tell the location of a ship. |
| Compass | Device that uses magnetism to show direction with a needle and a dial. |
| Caravel | Technology that allowed for greater speed and allowed the captain to steer the ship. |
| Age of Exploration | Began in 1400s when countries sent explorers from Europe to the Americas to create colonies. |
| Exploration | To travel to an unfamiliar area to learn more about it. |
| Colonization | When one country controls another for money. |
| Colony | An area of land that is controlled by another country. |
| Continent | One of the main land masses of the globe, (Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Australia, and Antarctica). |
| Glory | Something that is a source of honor, praise, or fame. |
| Culture | The behavior (e.g. language, food, dress, dance, art) and beliefs (e.g. religion, holidays and traditions) of a country or group of people. |
| Latitude | Imaginary lines that are seen on a map or globe going east and west; used to help determine a location. |
| Cultural Diffusion | When one culture influences another culture. |
| Trade | The exchange of goods. |
| Goods | Items that are traded. |
| Diseases | An illness or sickness that can lead to death. |
| Columbian Exchange | The exchange or trade of goods and other things such as diseases between the European explorers and the Native Americans in North and South America. |
| Immunity | The ability of a person's body to fight a disease. |
| Small Pox | A dangerous disease brought over Europe that killed Native Americans. |
| Measles | Usually a disease found in children with red spots on their skin, came over from Europe and killed Native Americans. |
| Influenza | Disease from Europe that killed Native Americans; also known as the flu. |
| Plantation | A large farm for cotton, sugar, and tobacco that used slaves as workers. |
| Middle Passage | Voyage of the slaves from Africa to the Americas across the Atlantic Ocean. |
| Triangle Trade | Exchange of goods between Africa, the Americas and Europe. |
| African Slave Trade | Time during which 11 million Africans were sent to the Americas to work on plantations. |
| Turning Point | A moment in which the course of events is turned into a new direction. |
