| Protons | Subatomic particles that have a positive electric charge |
| Neutrons | Subatomic particles that have no charge |
| Electrons | Subatomic particles with a negative charge |
| Element | A pure substance that can’t be broken down into simpler substances |
| Compound | Made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined |
| Metals | Most are solid and are recognized by their luster or shine |
| Nonmetals | Many are gases at room temperature, lack luster, and poor conductors of electric currents |
| Metalloids | Contain properties of metals and nonmetals and are typically solids with somewhat metallic luster |
