TermDefinition
Protons Subatomic particles that have a positive electric charge
Neutrons Subatomic particles that have no charge
Electrons Subatomic particles with a negative charge
Element A pure substance that can’t be broken down into simpler substances
Compound Made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined
Metals Most are solid and are recognized by their luster or shine
Nonmetals Many are gases at room temperature, lack luster, and poor conductors of electric currents
Metalloids Contain properties of metals and nonmetals and are typically solids with somewhat metallic luster
