Constitution | A governing document outlining government and laws. |
Constitutional Convention | Meeting of Delegates in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to decide how America should be governed. |
Articles of Confederation | America's first written plan for government creating a weak central government. |
Shays Rebellion | Series of armed attacks on government building in protest of high taxes. |
Delegates | A representative from each state chosen to make choices in the best interest of the states. |
Virginia Plan | Constitutional plan that called for a bicameral legislative branch with representation based on population. |
New Jersey Plan | Constitutional plan that called for a unicameral legislative branch with equal representation. |
Great Compromise | Compromise that combined the Virginia and New Jersey Plans created a bicameral legislature with a House of Representatives and a Senate. |
Three-Fifths Compromise | Compromise that allowed for three out of five slaves to count for representation in congress. |
Electoral College Compromise | Compromise that set up the indirect election of the President by having state legislatures cast the final vote. |
Federalism | Division of power between the national government and the states governments. |
Ratification | Formal approval of a contract, in this case the US Constitution. |
Bill of Rights | The first ten amendments to the Constitution that include civil rights and liberties. |
Amendment | A change to the constitution. |
First Amendment | Allows for freedom of religion, assembly, press, petition, and speech. |
Second Amendment | The right to bear arms. |
Third Amendment | Soldiers cannot be housed in private homes during peacetime. |
Fourth Amendment | The right to privacy. Protects against unreasonable search and seizure. |
Fifth Amendment | Rights of the accused including the right to remain silent. |
Sixth Amendment | Rights for those on trial including due process and the right to an attorney. |
Seventh Amendment | Right to have a jury trial in a civil case. |
Eighth Amendment | No cruel and unusual punishment. |
Ninth Amendment | People have other rights not listed in the Constitution. |
Tenth Amendment | State powers (Federalism). |
Federalists | The group in support of a strong central government and the signing of the Constitution. |
Anti-Federalists | The group who opposed the ratification of the Constitution and wanted to include a bill of rights. |
Due Process | Equal protection and fair treatment in the judicial process. |
Double Jeopardy | You cannot be tried twice for the same crime. |
Eminent Domain | The government can take private property for public use with payment. |
Article | A section or a distinct part of a constitution. |
Patriots | The colonists who wanted independence from Great Britain. |
Federalism | The division of power between the national and state governments. |
