Constitution | A governing document outlining government and laws. |
Constitutional Convention | Meeting of Delegates in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to decide how America should be governed. |
Articles of Confederation | America's first written plan for government creating a weak central government. |
Shays Rebellion | Series of armed attacks on government building in protest of high taxes. |
Delegates | A representative from each state chosen to make choices in the best interest of the states. |
Virginia Plan | Constitutional plan that called for a bicameral legislative branch with representation based on population. |
New Jersey Plan | Constitutional plan that called for a unicameral legislative branch with equal representation. |
Great Compromise | Compromise that combined the Virginia and New Jersey Plans created a bicameral legislature with a House of Representatives and a Senate. |
Three-Fifths Compromise | Compromise that allowed for three out of five slaves to count for representation in congress. |
Electoral College Compromise | Compromise that set up the indirect election of the President by having state legislatures cast the final vote. |
Federalism | Division of power between the national government and the states governments. |
Ratification | Formal approval of a contract, in this case the US Constitution. |
