What was the two purposes of the reconstruction? Abolish slavery and get the South back into the Union.
Reconstruction occurred primarily during what ten year period? 1866 - 1876
President Lincoln called for amnesty for southerners returning to the Union. What does amnesty mean? A full pardon to southern soldiers and provide no punishment towards them.
Explain what President Lincoln wanted with his 10 Percent Plan. Lincoln’s plan stated that if 10% of southern men in a state who voted in 1860 swore a loyalty oath to the Union, that state would be let back into the Union.
How did the Republican Congress, specifically the Radical Republicans, differ with President Lincoln regarding Reconstruction? The Radical Republicans where much more strict then President Lincoln. They wanted over 50% of Southern men in a state to swear a loyalty oath to the Union.
Who became President after Abraham Lincoln? President Johnson
Did President Johnson’s plan for Reconstruction agree more with President Lincoln or the Republicans Congress? President Lincoln
What was the purpose of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution? To abolish slavery.
What was the purpose of the Black Codes? To make sure that the Blacks weren’t on the same political, economic, and political level as Whites.
List 6 limitations on African Americans’ right as a result of Black Codes They could not hold meetings without a White man present, travel without a permit, own guns, attend school with Whites, serve on a jury, tried to limit there right to vote.
Describe the life of a sharecropper: Sharecroppers where given basic tools and a bit of land and were forced to give most of the money they made from there crops to the land owner.
Explain the importance of Frederick Douglas: Frederick Douglas was a former slave who was a big advocate for Blacks right to vote, and other Civil Rights
What was the purpose of the Freedmen’s Bureau: It was to provide certain services and supplies for the poor people in the south, White and Black.
List four ways the Freedmen’s Bureau tried to help poor White and Blacks in the south: The built schools, hospitals, provided food and water and jobs for the poor people in the south.
What was the purpose of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution? To grant all U.S. Citizens Civil Rights
What was the purpose of the Reconstruction Acts? Divided the South into 5 Military Districts, and sent Northern/Federal troops to the south to enforce the constitution.
What was the purpose of the Tenure of Office Act and what did President Johnson do to violate it? The purpose of the Tenure of Office Act meant that President Johnson could not fire or in turn hire anyone. He broke this by firing the Secretary of War.
Why did Republican Congress bring articles of Impeachment against President Johnson? Because he broke the Tenure of Office Act.
Was President Johnson removed from office? How close was the vote? No. He was one vote away from being impeached and that one vote was Kansas Senator Edmund Ross.
Who won the 1868 Presidential Election? U.S. Grant
What was the purpose of the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution? Granted all U.S. Citizens the right to vote
Who were Carpetbaggers? People from the North who went down to the South to take advantage of the economy.
Who were Scalawags? People from the South who cooperated with the North and supported Reconstruction.
Explain what the Ku Klux Klan began and what was the purpose of this organization: Angry White Southerners that scared and abused members of the Black community.
What was the purpose of the Enforcement Acts? Said that the Federal Government had the Rights to defeat the Clan by any means necessary.
Summarize the important events of the compromise of 1877: Hayes unrightfully becomes President, North ends Reconstruction.
List two ways that African Americans Right to vote in the south were infringed upon and were used to bar them from voting: Often poll taxes and literacy test were used to try and prevent Blacks from voting.
What was the purpose of Jim Crow Laws? Segregation is the main reason behind them. To separate the Whites and Blacks in any way possible.
How did the U.S. Supreme Court uphold the policy of segregation and explain the importance of the case that was decided: Plessy V. Ferguson was where the famous quote, “Separate but equal”, came from. This is how the U.S. Supreme Court upheld segregation.
Explain, in detail, the importance of the Plessy V. Ferguson Supreme Court decision: The importance of the Plessy V. Ferguson case was that it basically allowed segregation and legalized it, saying it had to be equal segregation but knowing that wasn’t going to happen and they had no way to enforce it.
