indictment written statement issued by a grand jury charging a citizen with a crime
naturalization process for granting full citizenship to a person of foreign birth
posterity those who come after (in this case, the decendants of the writers of the Constitution_
reprieve a delay or cancellation of punishment
suffrage right to vote
override to declare null and void; set aside (ex: Congress overrides a president's veto)
veto reject; (ex: when the president refuses to sign a bill that has been approved by both houses of Congress)
popular sovereignty the people's right to rule; gov't in which the people rule
republicanism a democracy in which the citizens chose representatives to govern for them
limited government restrictions on the powers of the government to prevent abuses on the rights of the citizens; the principle that requires all citizens (including gov't officials) to obey the law
separation of powers the division of the powers & responsibilities of government into 3 parts or branches
checks and balances the ability of each branch of government to exercise checks (controls) over the other branches
federalism system of government where power is shared between the central (national or federal) government and the state governments
preamble introduction ( in this case - the introduction to the Constitution)
domestic at home (in this case - related to issues within or inside the borders a country)
infrastructure the fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or area, as transportation and communication systems, power plants, and schools
State of the Union annual (yearly)report given to Congress by the President of the United States concerning the condition of the country
electors voters

revenue income a government collects to pay its expenses
