5 19th Century

Lead up to the Civil War and Reconstruction

TermDefinition
Sectionalism An exaggerated devotion to the interests of a region over those of a country as a whole.
Slavery The practice or system of owning slaves.
States' Rights The rights and powers held by individual US states rather than by the federal government.
Civil War A war fought between the United States and 11 Southern states that seceded to form the Confederate States of America.
Reconstruction The period after the Civil War when the southern states were reorganized into the U.S.
13th Amendment Abolished slavery in the United States.
14th Amendment Granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States—including former enslaved people—and guaranteed all citizens “equal protection of the laws.”
15th Amendment The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
