Creation and the Purpose of the Constitution
| Term | Definition |

| Congress | The legislative branch of the federal government that makes the nation's laws. There are two parts of congress: the House and the Senate. |
| Political Parties | An organized group of people or bodies who seek to capture political power through an election in order to run the affairs of a country. |
| Contributions | A gift or payment to a common fund or collection. |
| National Government | Composed of three distinct branches: legislative, executive, and judicial, whose powers are vested by the U.S. Constitution in the Congress, the President, and the Federal courts. |
| President | The head of state of the U.S., the chief executive of the federal government, and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. |
| George Mason | An American planter, politician and delegate to the U.S. Constitutional Convention of 1787, one of three delegates who refused to sign the Constitution. |
| James Madison | America's fourth President (1809-1817), made a major contribution to the ratification of the Constitution by writing The Federalist Papers, along with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. |
| Preamble | An introduction to a document that describes the documents purpose. |
| U.S. Constitution | A document that embodies the fundamental laws and principles by which the United States is governed. It was drafted by the Constitutional Convention and later supplemented by the Bill of Rights and other amendments. |
