Reasons for Colonization

| Cash Crop | A crop produced for its commercial value rather than for use by the grower. |
| Economic Gain | When revenue is higher than costs in an economy. |
| Religious Freedom | The right to choose what religion to follow and to worship without interference. |
| Shipbuilding | The design and construction of ships. |
| Colonized | To settle in, and take control of, land outside your own borders. |
| Explorers | A person who explores an unfamiliar area; an adventurer. |
| Free Enterprise | An economic system in which private business operates in competition and largely free of state control. |
| Industries | Economic activity concerned with the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods. |
| Settled | a colony or any small community of people. |
| Ann Hutchinson | A spiritual leader in colonial Massachusetts who challenged male authority by preaching to both women and men and by questioning Puritan teachings about salvation. |
| Colonial America | A vast land settled by Spanish, Dutch, French and English immigrants. |
| Colonial Period | The time period from 1607-1776 where America was colonized. |
| European Colonies | Areas that were colonized by European nations. |
| John Smith | An English explorer, soldier and writer best known for his role in establishing the first permanent English colony in the New World at Jamestown, Virginia. |
| Roger Williams | A Puritan minister, theologian, and author who founded Providence Plantations, which became the Colony of Rhode Island. |
| William Bradford | A passenger on the Mayflower in 1620. He became the second Governor of Plymouth Colony and served for over 30 years. |
| William Penn | Founded the Province of Pennsylvania, the British North American colony that became the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. |
