CAFS: Communities

Definition & reasons for formation

TermDefinition
Community A group of people within society, who have a common background or shared interests and who may live in a similar area
Geographic reasons There is more high-density housing near cities, due to the demand for housing close to work, entertainment, restaurants and other services. People who live in these areas might be members of their apartment block community and of the city community.
Interest-based reasons Communities can also emerge when people group together because of what they enjoy doing. These interests can include sports, other leisure pastimes, religion, dance, politics, art, music, language and spirituality.
Education Going to a particular school, college, university or TAFE
Employment When a specific type of employment is available in a particular area, the people who live and work there often form a community together. This occurs particularly in places such as mining towns.
Preferred lifestyle This includes communities formed by people who choose to live in the city as opposed to the country, or near the beach, the bush or the snow.
Purpose-built communities There may be instances in which communities emerge as a result of the purposeful intervention of industry, business or political decision-making. Eg, Canberra, the Australian national capital city, was purpose built for political reasons.
