Keeping Up Morale

Emergency Powers Defence Act | This was passed in the summer of 1939 and gave the Government the power to create laws without going through Parliament in the interest of the country's safety |
Campaigns | Campaigns were launched to help civilians to cope with the day to day impact of total war. |
Propaganda | Attempted to maintain unity, loyalty and confidence throughout the war. Victories were emphasized whereas discussions of defeat were kept to a minimum. |
Radio | Used to broadcast information and popular music and radio channels to help boost Britain's war spirit. Information was censored by the government so the war spirit wasn't damaged |
Cinema | Was used to help promote the war effort, raise people's spirits, share victories and broadcast information about the situation. |
Propaganda Posters | The aims of the posters were: - to encourage support for the war - to convince people to act and think in a certain way - to appeal to people's sense of patriotism - to educate people about key issues during the war |
Censorship | Censorship was used to control the messages the public saw, any negatives about the war were kept to minimum. Radio, newspapers, magazines, cinema films and newsreels were all monitored by the Ministry of Information. |

The Spitfire Fund | If an individual or business could raise £5000, they could have their name painted on the fuselage of a Spitfire plane. Most large British towns had a plane named after them. The money covered the cost of building the frame. |
Use of Welsh Language by the Government | Information was published and broadcast in Welsh and during the war the BBC broadcast 20 minutes a day in Welsh. This was mostly news, talks, children's programmes and religious services. |
The Importance of Churchill as a War Leader | Churchill embodied the 'bulldog' spirit that was perhaps needed if Britain was going to win a long total war. Instead of trying to negotiate peace with Hitler, Churchill put a number of policies in place |
