Industrial Revolution

Industrial Revolution a time period beginning in Great Britain when society moved from making goods by hand to production in factories.
mass production Process of making large quantities of a product quickly and cheaply
factory A large building in which machinery is used to manufacture goods
steam engine an engine that uses the expansion or rapid condensation of steam to generate power. This was the fuel source of the Industrial Revolution
working conditions in factories long hours, low pay, unsafe conditions, physical punishment, and lack of ventilation
child labor During the Industrial Revolution, children were forced to work many hours each day under dangerous conditions and harsh treatment.
slum poor, crowded, and run-down urban (city) neighborhoods during the Industrial Revolution
air pollution The contamination of the atmosphere by the introduction of pollutants from human and natural sources. Industrial cities were polluted from the use of coal.
poor sanitation garbage and generally filthy living conditions contributed to the spread of disease in Industrial cities
capitalism an economic system where individuals can open businesses to make a profit
laissez-faire means that the government is completely "hands off" and does not regulate businesses at all
Robber Barons negative nickname given to wealthy business owners during the Industrial Revolution who were consumed with greed and only cared about making a profit
Captain of Industry positive nickname given to wealthy business owners during the Industrial Revolution who used their wealth to make society a better place
Boarding Houses First introduced in the Lowell mills to house and feed girls when they are not working in the factory.
Francis Cabot Lowell: American industrialist who developed the Lowell system, a mill system that included looms that could both weave thread and spin cloth. He hired young women to live and work in his mill.
George Eastman -invented the Kodak camera in 1888 -Captain of Industry who donated much of his wealth
Cornelius Vanderbilt A railroad owner who built a railway connecting Chicago and New York. He was often criticized for poor working conditions and his lack of donation to charity.
