Industrial Revolution

| steam engine | an engine that uses the expansion or rapid condensation of steam to generate power. This was the fuel source of the Industrial Revolution |
| working conditions in factories | long hours, low pay, unsafe conditions, physical punishment, and lack of ventilation |
| child labor | During the Industrial Revolution, children were forced to work many hours each day under dangerous conditions and harsh treatment. |
| slum | poor, crowded, and run-down urban (city) neighborhoods during the Industrial Revolution |
| air pollution | The contamination of the atmosphere by the introduction of pollutants from human and natural sources. Industrial cities were polluted from the use of coal. |
