Protestant Reformation

Protestant Reformation A time period in the 1500s in Europe when individuals began to protest against the Catholic Church and demand reform to the church.
Martin Luther a German monk who became one of the most famous critics of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1517, he wrote 95 theses, or statements of belief attacking the church practices.
95 Theses Arguments are written by Martin Luther against the Catholic church. They were posted on the door of his Wittenberg, Germany church on October 31, 1517.
Indulgence a pass or pardon Catholics could purchase from the Church to be forgiven for their sins.
Simony -the buying and selling of high church positions -corrupt practice that allowed lower-level priests to buy top positions in the church
John Calvin -French lawyer who protested against the Catholic Church -founded a strict Protestant religion known as Calvinism
Predestination -Calvin's religious theory that God has already planned out a person's life from before they were born -In other words, people were predestined for heaven or hell
Catholic Counter-Reformation The Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation in which it tried to reform itself.
Henry VIII (1491-1547) King of England from 1509 to 1547; his desire to annul his marriage led to a conflict with the pope, and England's break with the Roman Catholic Church.
Anglican Church Church of England set up in 1534; established by Henry VIII with himself as head, at least in part to obtain a divorce from his first wife
