African Americans in the Mid-1800s

| Nat Turner’s Rebellion | a slave rebellion led by Nat Turner that took place in Virginia in 1831, Turner and his followers killed 57 people in 2 days |
| oppression | the feeling of being weighed down or held back by severe and unfair force |
| passive | not active |
| racism | the belief that one race is superior to another |
| reformer | someone who works to make change in order to bring about improvement, end abuses, or correct injustice |
| segregation | the social separation of groups of people, especially by race |
| sympathetic | understanding or agreeing with the feelings or situation of another person |
| Underground Railroad | a secret network of free blacks and whites who helped thousands of slaves escape to free states and Canada |
| abolitionist | a person who wants to stop or abolish slavery |
| overseer | an employee of a plantation hired to oversee the work of slaves, prevent slaves from running away, and to punish those that break the rules |
| Harriet Tubman | served as a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, after escaping slavery herself, she rescued over 300 people and helped them to freedom in the North |
