| natural barrier | Mountains, deserts and/or oceans. Physical obstacles created by nature. |
| merchant | a person who buys and sells goods |
| dictator | a ruler who has complete power over a government |
| slave | a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them. |
| irrigation | To supply (land or crops) with water by means of pipes, sprinklers, ditches, or streams. |
| peninsula | land surrounded by water on three sides |
| trade network | a system of trade where people in different areas trade goods back and forth |
| empire | A group of states or territories controlled by one ruler |
| emperor | the ruler of an empire. |
| citizen | a person who has certain rights and duties in a city-state or nation. |
| city-state | a city that controls the land around it and set up their own government to function like a state. |
| civil war | A war between people of the same country. |
| barbarians | a person belonging to a tribe or group that is considered uncivilized. |
| scribe | A professional writer. |
| hierarchy | A group organized by rank. |
| Direct Democracy | Government in which ALL citizens vote on laws and select officials directly. |
| Representative Democracy | A system of government in which citizens elect representatives to make decisions about the laws for them. |

| peasants | Poor farmers who typically rent land from wealthy landowners. |
| mythology | Stories about gods and heroes that try to explain how the world works. |
| alliance | An agreement to work together. |

| silt | fertile soil on the side of the riverbanks that allowed for farming |
| Fertile Crescent | an area of rich farmland in Southwest Asia where the first civilizations began |
| inundation | flooding of the Nile |
| harvest | The gathering of crops for a season. |
| dynasty | A series of rulers from the same family. |
| Lords/Nobles | people of high rank in a society |
| persecute | to treat cruelly or harshly because of political, religious, or other differences |
| scapegoat | a person or group that is blamed for the actions of others |
| history | the study of the past |
| crusade | holy war |
| economy | The system of how money is made and used within a particular country or region. |
| priest | A religious leader. |
| culture | A word for the 'way of life' of groups of people, meaning the way they do things. |
| pandemic | An outbreak of a disease that occurs over a wide geographic area. |
| feudalism | A system where kings give land to nobles in exchange for service. |
| artifact | A simple object made by someone from the past. |
| architecture | The science of the design of structures or buildings such as houses, places of worship, and office buildings. |
| primary source | Something that comes from a time being studied or from a person who was involved in the events being studied. |
| secondary source | Something that interprets or summarizes information from primary sources. Textbooks, biographies, encyclopedias, and dictionaries are examples. |
| conquest | The act of getting/taking something by force. |
