With regards to the Civil War, what does "secede" mean? To leave the Union
What were the major causes of the Civil War? Slavery and States Rights
What battle was a turning point for the Civil War because it gave the North hope that they could actually win? The Battle of Antietam
What did the Emancipation Proclamation do? Declared an end to slavery
Where did the Civil War begin? Fort Sumter in Charlestown, SC
Why did Lincoln give the Gettysburg Address? It was a dedication of a national cemetery
What were abolitionists? People who were against slavery
What was the Underground Railroad? A group of people who helped slaves escape
What did the 13th Amendment do? Made slavery illegal
What did the 14th Amendment do? Granted citizenship to African Americans born in the US
What did the 15th Amendment do? Granted African American men the right to vote
What is segregation? The separation of different races
What did "Jim Crow" laws do? Promoted segregation between whites and blacks
What is a primary source? A document written at the time of the event
What is a secondary source? A document that refers to an event, but was written much later
What was "The Great Migration"? Many African Americans headed north between 1910 and 1940
Why did many people leave the south? To escape Jim Crow
Why did many people move north? Better jobs, better education and chance for equality.
