What powers or institutions did the first national government lack? Army, Court System, and President
How did the first congress aid in America's expansion? It passed the Northwest Ordinance, which created 5 new states.
What two things did the writers on the constitution do to help ratify it? Only 9 states had to ratify it and wrote The Federalist to convince people to support it.
What was the purpose of the bill of rights? To clearly define people's rights
How did George Washington respond to Pennsylvania farmers' refusal to pay their taxes? He sent federal troops to enforce the laws
Who became our 2nd president? John Adams
How were Native Americans affected by America's independence? Native Americans gave up some of their land through treaties and battles
When did treaties with Native Americans happen? 1784-1786
What was Philadelphia like in 1787? Heat, pollution, crowded, bugs, lots of things to do and see, smells of sewers, rough roads
Why were some important statesmen not at the convention? They were out of the country or they doubted an increase in power for the national government
Why did southern states want to include slaves in their population count? A larger population would mean they have more representation in congress
What groups of people were not represented at the convention? Blacks, Women, and Native Americans
What 5 freedoms do we have? Religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition
What are some of the jobs that Martha Washington did in her public life? Managed the household and clerical duties
How do we know so much about Abigail Adams? She wrote letters
