What was the Freedman's Bureau? Government agency set up to help freed blacks and poor whites Provided schools, clothing, health care, shelter, jobs, etc.
What was the Klu Klux Klan (KKK)? A terrorist group based on racism?
What were the goals of the KKK? Prevent African Americans from gaining rights and to maintain white supremacy in the South
What did the KKK do to achieve their goals? Burned crosses, tortured, abused and/or lynched people, burned African American homes, churches & schools
Who ran for US president in 1876? Tilden & Hayes
What was the result of the 1876 presidential election? There was not a majority of electoral votes --> it was a tie
What was the Compromise of 1877? The Corrupt Bargain: Southern democrats would support Hayes if he removed troops from the South and put southern democrats in his cabinet
What was the result of the Compromise of 1877? Hayes agreed & became president.
How are the ideas and beliefs of W.E.B. duBois and Booker T. Washington similar? They both wanted to improve the rights & status of African Americans
How did Booker T. Washington think African Americans could gain rights and improve their status? Blacks should be given an industrial education so they could always get work with their hands --> thought blacks should accept segregation and it would be overcome in time
How did W.E.B duBois think African Americans could gain rights and improve their status? Blacks should get a classical education (go to college) and not accept segregation --> they should fight for equal rights & protection right away
What do all the following have in common? Jim Crow Laws, poll taxes, literacy tests, Plessy v. Ferguson? They were all used to prevent African Americans from gaining rights & equality
