Cold War

Domino Theory The US theory that stated, if one country would fall to Communism then they all would.

Arms Race Cold war competition between the U.S. and Soviet Union to build up their respective armed forces and weapons
Truman Doctrine 1947, President Truman's policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or totalitarian ideology, mainly helped Greece and Turkey
Marshall Plan A United States program of economic aid for the reconstruction of Europe (1948-1952)
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization): A 1949 defense alliance initiated by the US, Canada, and 10 Western European nations
Warsaw Pact An alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations. This was in response to the NATO.
Berlin Airlift Airlift in 1948 that supplied food and fuel to citizens of west Berlin when the Soviets closed off land access to Berlin
Berlin Wall A wall separating East and West Berlin built by communist East Germany in 1961 to keep citizens from escaping to the West
Korean War (1950-1953) began as a civil war between North and South Korea -which had been established by the USSR and US under U.S. the United Nations joined to support South Korea and China entered to aid North Korea. The war left Korea divided along the 38th parallel.
Vietnam Conflict Conflict in the 1960s and 1970s during which the United States sent soldiers to South Vietnam to try to prevent communists from taking over the nation. The US was unsuccessful at containing communism.
Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 crisis that arose between the United States and the Soviet Union over a Soviet attempt to deploy nuclear missiles in Cuba. It was the closest the US and the Soviet Union came to nuclear war
Soviet-Afghan War war between Afghanistan and USSR. Afghanistan wins with the help of the US. Major defeat for the USSR.
Mikhail Gorbachev Soviet leader of the 1980s who worked with Reagan and brought an end the Cold War through his liberal policies
Glasnost a 1980's policy of the Soviet government allowing political openness and free discussion of social problems
Perestroika A 1980s policy initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev that involved the restructuring of the Soviet Union's economy to allow some capitalism.
