| longhorn | cattle that were stronger than others; long legs and could roam without miles without water |
| brand | design burned into the hide of the cow |
| line riders | rode along borders of a ranch to watch the cattle |
| roundup | cowboys from different ranches rounded up all the cattle. They drove them to an area and separated by brand. |
| stampede | when cattle are frightened they run wildly. |
| barbed wire | twisted wire with sharp points along the length of it. |
| boom | a time of rapid growth. |
| locomotive | a train steam engine |
| junction | where two or more rail lines meet |
| free enterprise | an economic system in which people are free to buy and sell goods and services with little control by the government |
| producer | a person or company that makes or sells goods |
| consumer | a person or company that buys or uses goods and services |
| supply | the number of items that producers offer for sale at a certain price |
| demand | number of items that consumers, or buyers, are willing to buy at a certain price. |
| petroleum | natural oil |
| oil refinery | a factory that cleans and processes oil into products such as gasoline or kerosene |
| urban | life in the city |
| rural | life in the countryside |
| inventions | newly created products |
| industry | a group of businesses that makes a type of product or provides a type of service |
| manufacture | to make or process goods, especially by machine in large quantities. |
| assembly line | moves a product past workers who stay in place |
