Westward Expansion

Between 1801 and 1861, the US expanded its territories. The US encouraged exploration and settlement
Thomas Jefferson bought land from France, which doubled the size of the United States Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was explored from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean by Lewis and Clark
Spain gave this territory to the United States in a treaty Florida
This territory was first part of Mexico, then became its own independent republic, and then was added to the United States. Texas
Great Britain split this territory with the United States in a treaty Oregon
This territory was added to the United States after a war with Mexico California and the southwest (Mexican Cession)
People wanted to move west because of ___________________________________ in the eastern states. population growth
In the west, there was an availability of cheap, fertile land
An example of a time when searching for gold was very popular was the California Gold Rush
These were economic opportunities in the west gold, logging, farming
For enslaved people that escaped, the West was an opportunity for freedom
Transportation became cheaper and faster with rivers and canals
Examples of cheaper and faster transportation were Erie Canal and steamboats
It became easier to travel with knowledge of overland trails
Two examples of overland trails were Oregon and Santa Fe
This was the idea that expansion was for the good of the country and was the right of the country. Manifest Destiny
