Middle Ages

Middle Ages Also known as the medieval period, the time between the collapse of the Roman Empire (476-1453 C.E.) to the Renaissance in Western Europe
Feudalism A weak political system in which nobles are granted the use of lands that legally belong to their king, in exchange for their loyalty, military service, and protection of the people who live on the land
Manorialism Economic system during the Middle Ages where land ownership gives a person wealth.
Catholic Church • central to Medieval Europeans' lives • united Western Europe during Middle Ages
Crusades A series of holy wars from 1096-1270 AD undertaken by European Christians to free the Holy Land from Muslim rule. Christians lost the Crusades.
Pope Urban II Leader of the Roman Catholic Church who asked European Christians to take up arms against Muslims, starting the Crusades
Effects of the Crusades - cultural diffusion (trade) between Europeans & Muslims - one million deaths - decline of feudalism - rise of absolute monarchs
Bubonic Plague (Black Death) A deadly pandemic that was spread by fleas living on rats. The plague spread across Asia and Europe in the mid-14th century, killing millions of people
Secular -Non-religious -Catholic church played both a religious and non-religious role in Western Europe
Holy Land The region of present-day Israel; includes the city of Jerusalem, which is a holy city to Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.
Fall of Rome in the West -476 AD -caused by over expansion, foreign invasion, and over taxation -led to the Middle Ages in Europe
medieval castle built for protection - included a moat, Great Hall, drawbridge, dungeon, gate towers, and murder holes
