What was the Tang dynasty? | It was a dynasty in China that started after the fall of the Sui dynasty and lasted for 300 years. Tang Taizong was the first emperor. He expanded the land and further rulers expanded and strengthened the central government. |
Why did Tang fall? | With the taxes they pushed and not enough money for their armies, Muslim armies defeated them which led to the fall. |
How did the Song dynasty start? | After the fall of the Tang dynasty Taizu brought China back together and started the dynasty which also lasted 300 years. It was in southern China due to threats and grew rich from trade. |
Who were scholar-officials? | Scholar-officials were a group men who passed an exam and existed in the most upper class along with their families. This was called the gentry,. |
What were some of the main achievements of the two dynasties? | A mechanical compass, block printing, paper money, acupuncture, agriculture (rice production) and a mechanical clock were some great achievements |
What was Confucianism? | It was a philosophy based on Confucius and his beliefs about social and civic responsibility. |
Why was there a Golden Age for art? | In Tang poetry was popular and flourished in the dynasty. Two important poets were Li Bo and Tu Fu. In Song they had beautiful realistic paintings in black |
What was the role of women? | Women were less superior to men. A woman's work was viewed as less important than the mens. They had to bind their feet for beauty. |
What was the geography/location of Ancient Korea? | Korea is on a peninsula between China and Japan. A lot of the terrain of mountains while the other was flat plains. It was hot during summer and cold during winter |
How did China affect Korea? | Korea adopted and adapted many of the achievements from China including writing, printing, Confucianism and Buddhism, government, and more. |
What were some of the main achievements? | Some of the main achievements were writing, movable metal printing, and celadon pottery |
What was Silla and what did it do for Korea? | Silla was a dynasty in Korea which was able to unify Korea. They also created close ties with China which led to them taking the Chinese language and adapting it into their own. |
What did the Koryo dynasty do and how did it fall? | It started due to the fall/decline of the Silla dynasty. They adopted the Chinese examination system (which failed),and fell due to Mongols taking over. |
What was the social class structure? | Upper class(nobility), middle class (merchants, artisans,commoners) lower class (farmers and slaves) These were hereditary |
How did Japan's geography affect the people? | There wasn't much good land for farmers so a large food source was fish/fishing, they also had threats of natural disasters like typhoons |
What were the religions in Japan? | They were Shinto and Buddhism. Buddhism was given and adapted from China but they followed both religions that they had |
How did Japan borrow from China? | They adapted many achievements that they saw including writing, art, culture, and government. They adapted China's ways and traditions into their own but the culture wouldn't be the way it is now without borrowing and looking at China's culture. |
What was it like in the court during the Heian Period? | Life was strict, you had to have proper etiquette (Follow rules). You can't laugh in public, the women had to wear the correct number of skirts , you had to write poetry and paint. They were in the upper class. |
What was the relationship between landowners and farmers? | The landowners challenged the government because they acted individually. They would let farmers farm/work on their land for protection. The more land from farmers they conquered the more power they had. |
Why were samurais important? | The samurais were a part of the uppermost class. They protected the lords/landowners. They followed a code called the Bushido which meant they had to show courage, show generosity, and had a noble death instead of a long life. |
Who were the Shogun? | They were the real leaders, they were in charge of the military/ had military dictator power (which had the most power). They ruled over the emperors. They brought stability to Japan yet there were still fights between lords over land. |
