| What are the types of causes of migration? | The causes of migration fall under three categories: environmental, economic, and political. The environment has always been an important factor but economic and political problems didn't arise until later in history. |
| What factor do historians look at to determine why people are attracted to certain places? | Historians look at a push-pull factor to help them recognize why people migrated to certain places. People might feel a pull to a location because of job opportunities or more land. A push factor might be a lack of resources. |
| What are some results of migration? | Population density can change, blending of languages, technology and ideas are shared, quality of life can be improved, clashes between groups may create unrest, famine or lack of natural resources due to a bigger population, unemployment and poverty. |
| How can the spread of languages help track migration? | When two languages have similar words to mean the same thing, it means that speakers of those languages have come in contact with each other at some point in time. This works because when people move to new places, they take their language with them. |
| How did the Bantu-speaking people spread their language and culture? | Over the course of 1,500 years, the Bantu-speaking people migrated southwards in Africa. As they went, they came across of groups and exposed them to their language and culture. |
| What skill did Bantu-speaking peoples have that others didn't? | Bantu-speaking peoples were skilled iron-workers. When territorial wars broke out, other groups were unfairly matched because they still used stone weapons. |
| What farming technique did Bantu-speakers use? | Bantus used a strategy called slash and burn when they were farming. They burned down parts of a forest and mixed the ashes with soil. |
| Why did the Bantus have to move so often? | Bantu-speakers migrated very often because their farming technique didn't keep the land fertile for very long and it destroyed some of the surrounding land. |
| Why did the Bantus start migrating? | After they developed agriculture, they got more food from farming than from hunting and gathering. This caused the population to greatly increase so they needed to plant more land. Soon, there wasn’t enough for everyone. Up north was too densely populated |
| How did the Bantu-speaking people create new cultures? | The Bantu people shared ideas with other groups and intermarried. The combination of both cultures made new ones. |
| How does migration affect the people moving and the current settlers? | Whenever a new group migrates to a place where people already live, both groups have to adjust their ways of life. Some changes can be good and easy for both groups but others can be difficult and take a long time. |
| Who were the Bantu-speaking people? | The Bantus were multiple groups of nomadic herders. It is believed that they are related to the Nok peoples. |
| What direction did the Bantus migrate in? | The Bantus migrated southwards and followed the Congo River. At some point, they split into two paths, one went west and the other went east. |
| What was a unifying influence for all the groups? | Even though a lot of new cultures emerged, language was a unifying influence that all the groups had in common. |
| What are some reasons people have migrated in the past? | Some reasons people in the past have migrated are: after societies became more industrialized, people moved to work in factories, Religious or ethnic persecution drove people away to survive, Settlers moved to America looking for religious tolerance. |
| How long did it take the Bantu-speaking peoples to reach the southern tip of Africa? | It took about 1,500 for the Bantus to reach the southern-most part of Africa. (This is a short time in history) It took them such a short amount of time due to their agriculture technique. |
| How many languages have come from the Bantu-speaking people? | Over 900 languages have been produced from the migration of Bantu-speaking peoples. All these languages came from one language. |
| Where did the Bantu-speaking people originally live? | The Bantus originally lived in the Savanna south of Sahara. |
| How did the Bantus decide where to settle? | The Bantus used a lot of iron for iron working and hardwood to fuel smelting furnaces so they looked for these resources to decide where to settle. |
