Mayan Civilization

What is a civilization? a culture that has developed systems of specialization, religion, government and learning.
What is a nomad? a person that has no permanent home and travels from place to place in search of food.
What is surplus? an amount leftover after requirements have been met. An excess of something.
What does it mean to specialize? to concentrate on and become an expert in a particular area or skill
Describe political factors in a society. characteristics that have to do with the structure of the government. Having to do with law and order.
Describe economic factors in a society. having to do with the production of materials, trade, and the management of wealth in a community.
Describe social factors in a society. having to do with how people in a society relate to each other. Social classes, education, and religion are in this category.
Describe environmental factors in a society. characteristics that have to do with the Earth’s features/geography and how they affect a group of people.
What is archaeology? Archaeology is the scientific study of past cultures based on artifacts and other evidence that people left behind.
What is an archaeologist? Studies the past by using artifacts discover clues to ancient civilizations and mysteries.
What are fossils? the remains of living things (plants, animals, people), NOT of things that were made.
What are artifacts? the remains of things that were made, NOT the remains of living things.
What is an archaeological site? a place or area that archaeologists wish to explore
What does it mean to excavate? to dig
What did the Mayans call their type of writing? hieroglyphics
Where was the Mayan civilization located? In Mexico, Central America or the Yucatan Peninsula
The Mayan civilization was divided into different areas called city-states
How did someone become a ruler of a city-state? it was passed down from generation to generation
Mayan writing has been found on the walls of buildings, murals
Art was important to the Mayans because rulers believed that the more beautiful art that they had, the more important they were
Who did children learn from? their elders
What did students learn about? weaving, pottery, farming, math and astronomy
What did the Mayans worship? They worshipped over 150 gods.
What religious rituals did the Mayans practice? They conducted human sacrifices to please the gods and help religious ceremonies with music and dancing.
Who were considered the leaders in the society? priests and nobles
Who was lowest on the social pyramid? farmers and slaves
Why was farming important to the economy? They traded surplus for goods they did not have.
What is the slash and burn method the Mayans used? They used this to clear crops from the land to make room for new crops.
What are hieroglyphs? pictures and symbols that represent words
