| Missouri Compromise | an agreement, proposed in 1819 by Henry Clay, to keep the number of slave and free states equal |
| Wilmot Proviso | a law passed in 1846 that banned slavery in any territories won by the U.S. from Mexico |
| Free Soil Party | the bipartisan anti-slavery party founded in the U.S. in 1846 to keep slavery out of the western territories |
| secede | to withdraw from membership in a group |
| fugitive | a runaway |
| civil war | a war between people of the same country |
| Compromise of 1850 | an agreement over slavery by which California joined the Union as a free state and a strict fugitive slave law was passed |
| Fugitive Slave Act | a law passed in 1850 that required all citizens to aid in the capture of runaway slaves |
| popular sovereignty | government by consent of the governed |
| Kansas Nebraska Act | an 1854 law that established the territories of Nebraska and Kansas, giving the settlers of each territory the right of popular sovereignty to decide on the issue of slavery |
| Dred Scott v. Sanford | an 1857 Supreme Court case that brought into question the federal power over slavery in the territories |
| Border Ruffians | proslavery bands from Missouri who often battled antislavery forces in Kansas |
| lawsuit | a legal case brought to settle a dispute between a person or group |
| arsenal | a place where guns are stored |
| treason | a betrayal of or action against one's own country |
| border state | a slave state that remained in the Union during the civil war |
| martyr | a person who dies for his or her beliefs |
| Republican Party | a political party established in the United States in 1854 with the goal of keeping slavery out of the western territories |
| guerrilla warfare | a type of fighting in which small military groups use surprise attacks and other tactics |
