What did Clay’s American System do? How did this benefit America? Free-Enterprise System! Cleared land to build roads, railroads, canals, and improve overall transportation and encourage American Manufacturing. This opened new markets for goods. Improved transportation helped the American Economy grow through expanding the distance between markets, speeding production and delivery, and made it possible for people to live and work West.
What was the importance of the Monroe Doctrine? Keep European influence out of the Western Hemisphere preventing further European colonization there.
What led to the creation of political parties in the United States? Arguments over the extent of the power of the federal government.
Name three examples of US policy created to avoid political conflicts with European nations during the first 5 presidencies. Washington – Proclamation of Neutrality (1793), Jefferson – Embargo Act (1807), Monroe Doctrine (1823)
What was Jefferson’s Foreign Policy & Embargo Act? (Sub-question: What is impressment?) The Embargo Act sought to cut off all trade with other countries. Its goal was to stop American sailors from being kidnapped and forced into military service by the British Navy (impressment).
Who was John Marshall and what precedent was set by Marbury v. Madison? Marshall was the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Marbury v. Madison established Judicial Review - which is the ability of federal courts to determine the constitutionality of a law.
War of 1812: What was the effect on economy, manufacturing, trade, expansion of the U.S? US Manufacturing (industrial) grew, trade with Britain decrease, new trade alliances resulted in increased foreign investment, and the US expanded West
Define Free enterprise system Businesses are free to: 1. Operate with little government regulation, 2. They pay low taxes, 3. Own private property, 4. Keep their profits, and 5. Foster competition.
What are canals and what was their impact during the early 1800s? Manmade waterways (like manmade rivers) made shipping goods by water possible rather than by land.
What was the importance of Gibbons v. Ogden Court held: The Federal gov’t and NOT state gov’ts would regulate (control) interstate (between states) trade.
What were the contributions of Eli Whitney and Samuel Slater? They created new, faster, and less expensive methods of production. Made more, less-expensive products.
What did many immigrants moving to America in the early 1800s do for work? Where? Most were farmers, and many lived in the Midwest, where farmland was plentiful and cheap.
How did the Industrial Revolution change America in the Nineteenth Century (1800s)? Factories made production efficient which created more products and decreased the price of those products. People began to migrate (move) to cities to pursue jobs which previously did not exist (think: Factory jobs).
The invention of the telegraph led to the first instantaneous long-distance transmission of information. This significantly helped the U.S. grow and development. Who was best known for the development of this innovation? Samuel Morse (Yes, Morse Code came from this guy’s name)
What was an unintentional consequence of the invention of the cotton gin? Why? A sharp increase in the demand for slave labor as plantations tried keep up with the demand for cheap cotton.
What led to a surge in Irish citizens leaving Ireland and immigrating to America? Define: The Irish Potato Famine – The extreme lack of food brought about due to disease killing potato crops in Ireland leading to the deaths of over one million Irish.
What were the consequences of improved steamboat technology? As steamboat technology improved, the price of fares decreased, which meant more people could travel by steamboat. This created a tourist industry, and the cost to transport goods decreased as well.
The potential for new markets in the West, the abundance of inexpensive farmland, and the discovery of gold were all economic motives for the development of what policies? Manifest Destiny – The belief that Americans had the right and responsibility to expand the United States Westward to the Pacific Ocean.
Define: Urbanization The process of people moving to cities from farms, usually for jobs-Ex: factories
Define: Rural The country or farms, agriculture. Opposite of cities.
