| Civil case | Court settles a disagree or dispute between 2 parties “Lawsuit” dealing with money &/or property |
| Criminal case | Courts determine whether a person accused of breaking a law is guilty or not of a misdemeanor or felony |
| Felony | A serious crime that can result in jail, prison, or the death penalty |
| Misdemeanor | A less serious crime that can result in a warning, fine, or community service |
| Due process | Protection against unfair government action 5th Amendment- federal 14th Amendment- state/local |
| Appeal | Ask a higher court to review the decision of the lower court |
| Bail | Money or property an accused person gives a court to guarantee they will show up for trial |
| Magistrate | Official who issues search warrants, arrest warrants, summons (civil case), subpoena (criminal case), and sets bail |
| Judicial Review | Power of the US and VA Supreme Courts to determine the constitutionality of laws and acts (Marbury vs. Madison) |
