Having to do with the court system & justice Judicial
The authority to hear a case for the first time Original Jurisdiction (OJ)
The authority to review a case from a lower court Appellate Jurisdiction (AJ)
Civil case Court settles a disagree or dispute between 2 parties “Lawsuit” dealing with money &/or property
Criminal case Courts determine whether a person accused of breaking a law is guilty or not of a misdemeanor or felony
Felony A serious crime that can result in jail, prison, or the death penalty
Misdemeanor A less serious crime that can result in a warning, fine, or community service
Due process Protection against unfair government action 5th Amendment- federal 14th Amendment- state/local
Appeal Ask a higher court to review the decision of the lower court
Bail Money or property an accused person gives a court to guarantee they will show up for trial
Magistrate Official who issues search warrants, arrest warrants, summons (civil case), subpoena (criminal case), and sets bail
Judicial Review Power of the US and VA Supreme Courts to determine the constitutionality of laws and acts (Marbury vs. Madison)
