What does Islam mean in Arabic? Submission to the wall of Allah
What are the Five Pillars of Islam? The Declaration of Faith, Hajj/Pilgrimage, Charity, Prayer, Fasting
Why was Mecca an important city in western Arabia? During the holy months, religious pilgrims would stop in Mecca. Mecca was a pilgrimage center and became very important for trade.
How did Islam spread Arabic culture? Through trade and business, through literature, art, writing, and architecture.
What was the birth place of Islam? Mecca and Medina
Why did an internal conflict develop in Islam after the death of Muhammad? Muhammad had neither specified a successor nor indicated how to choose one.
What was the main difference between the Sunni and Shiite branches of Islam? The Sunnis believed that the caliph or leader needed to be any male Muslim who followed Islam. The Shiite’s believed that the caliph or leader needed to be a relative of Muhammad.
What is the type of government connected to the Islamic civilization? An autocracy and theocracy
What attracted non-Muslims to Islam and Islamic culture? Muslims allowed the people who they conquered to practice their own religion, the value places on education, and that Islam gave people hope and some equality that didn’t exist before.
What was the preferred method of Muslim scientists? Observations based on logical experiments
What was the role of women in Muslim society? Depended on income of husband; worked in the fields or supervised the household, raised the children
What were the four classes of the Muslim culture and who did they consist of? Upper class - Muslims at birth Second class - Converts to Islam Third class - the “protected people” and Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians Lowest class - Slaves
What role did cities play in the advancement of Muslim culture? Cities were the cultural center of Islamic learning and symbolized the strength of the caliph/leader.
What were the main achievements of the Muslim culture? Literature, Art, Architecture, Science, Mathematics, Optics, Astronomy, Agriculture, Philosophy
