Union The portion of the country that remained loyal to the Federal government during the war
Confederacy The states that seceded from the United States to form their own nation
Border States The states of Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and Missouri, in which many of their citizens supported the South
Sectionalism Concerned with the interest of a section or region, rather than the whole country
Secession The action of withdrawal from the United States
Henry Clay A former Congressman that presented the Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 The compromise that admitted California as a free state and introduced a more effective fugitive slave law as well as popular sovereignty
Stephen A. Douglas A former senator who introduced the Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act The bill that would create the Kansas and Nebraska territories, repeal the Missouri Compromise, and establish the popular sovereignty
Border Ruffians A group of proslavery Missourians that entered Kansas to vote illegally for the proslavery government
Charles Sumner A former senator who criticized the South and slavery, eventually to be struck by Preston S. Brooks
The Republican Party A party established in the 1850s to limit the spread of slavery to the territories
Dred Scott An African-American slave who sued for freedom for having lived in a free state of Illinois
Lincoln-Douglas Debates A series of debates between the Democratic senator, Stephen A. Douglas, and the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln
Harpers Ferry Raid An uprising by a band led by John Brown on the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia
