Term | Definition |

civil war | conflict between people within a country, one major result of the U.S. Civil War was that the federal government’s power over the states was strengthened |
Casualties | combined number of killed and wounded |
Union | the United States of America also called Union, Federals, Yankees, blue, etc. |
Confederacy | The Confederate States of America, also called Rebels, gray, etc. |
Fort Sumter, S.C. | (April 12, 1861) first shots of the Civil War were fought over this U.S. Army fort in Charleston Harbor, fort surrenders to South Carolina’s troops |
Antietam, MD | (Sept. 17, 1862) bloodiest day of fighting in the war with a huge number of casualties on each side, no winner, Lee has to stop his plan to invade the North |
Gettysburg, PA | (July 1-3, 1863) Union victory after three days of fighting, Lee retreats into Virginia and never tries to invade the North again |
Vicksburg, MS | (May – July 4, 1863) Grant lays siege to the city, it is the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, the Union cuts the South in two and gains control of the entire river |
Appomattox Court House | (April 9, 1865) Lee surrenders to Grant and the war is basically over, terms of surrender were to end the war without further suffering or hatred |
Abraham Lincoln | 16th President of the US, election prompts South Carolina and other southern states to secede, believes his duty is to “preserve the Union” |
Gettysburg Address | (November 19, 1863) Lincoln attends the dedication ceremony of a new cemetery on the Gettysburg battlefield; message is about making the war worth the loss and fulfilling the promises of the Declaration of Independence |
Emancipation Proclamation | (January 1, 1863) frees slaves in all rebelling states not in Union held territory, so it did not actually free any slaves at all, makes the war about slavery and leads the way to eventual elimination of slavery in the U.S. |
Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address | (1861) said he would not interfere with slavery, that the Union must be preserved and that differences can still be worked out |
Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address | (1865) message of healing, the war is nearly over, the Union will be preserved |
Jefferson Davis | President of the Confederate States of America |
Jefferson Davis’ Inaugural Address | believes the Southern states rights have been taken away, they want peace and free trade, not war |
John Wilkes Booth | Southern sympathizer, assassinated Lincoln on April 14, 1865 and was found almost 2 weeks later |
Robert E. Lee | commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, seen as the leader of the Confederate Armies though did not have overall command |
Ulysses S. Grant | final commander of the United States Army, led the Union to Victory |
Clara Barton | nurse that eventually founded the American Red Cross, helped bring new techniques to battlefield hospitals |
Stonewall Jackson | Confederate general, responsible for many victories, considered by Lee to be his right hand, died when accidentally shot by his own men, a blow to the Confederate Armies |
William Carney | African American Medal of Honor winner |
