Lusitania A british ship carried passengers. The ship sank in May 1915. The United States were mad because Germany shot down this passenger ship that had Americans on board.
Sussex pledge A ship used by the french. Was attacked by a German U-boat about a year later just like the Lusitania ship in May 1915. Later, Germany said they will not attack without giving a warning. After about a year, German ended up not sticking with this pledge.
Zimmerman Note Germany wanted Mexico to attack the United States. Germany promised to give back recaptured areas of American land. People were annoyed. Later on, congress decided to declare war on Germany on April 6, 1917.
Committee on Public Information They had to convince Americans to be involved in the war effort. This was done by using posters, by making speeches, and more.
Four-minute men They talked about the war in speeches. This was in churches and movie theaters.
Espionage Act This made people not allowed to speak about the war effort. There are severe penalties for spying on the government. This is still here today.
Sedition Act This act made people be imprisoned. They were not allowed to speak against the war effort. Today this act is not used.
Selective Service Act Made Americans have to go into the military for at least ages 21 to 30. About 3 million Americans had to register in War World I.
Liberty Bonds Americans had to raise taxes. Later on, Americans gave billions of dollars to their allies before war for trading.
War Industries Board They had to make sure their materials were being made faster. This was to prepare for war.
Food Administration Worked on supplying goods for troops. This made prices go up.
Victory gardens Places where people grew their food in. This was because they wanted to have food prices be the same if there was war.
National War Labor Board They helped people make an agreement. They might have helped change their work hours and minimum wage.
Nationalism Two people bought Germany in 1871 and united the country. Serbia wanted to have a place and this made them break away from Austria, Hungary. Some groups of humans, such as ethnic groups, should be free to rule themselves.
Imperialism To have a bigger empire. Not good for places that are independent, it made them have others use the empire in their way that could be bad. For Britain's, more aliases. A, of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.
Militarism To make an empire better. To get ready for war. This made many new aliases with the countries.
Alliance To join together. Most likely signing something that says you will not betray.
Archduke Francis Ferdinand Got killed visiting Austria. Outside in the place they got shot and died. It ignited the war of WW1 because it destroyed their peace.
Gavrilo Princip A man that shot Archduke Francis Ferdinand. This destroyed peace between Serbia and Austria.
Mobilize To get ready for war. This was mainly in Russia, Serbia, and France.
Central Powers The alliance with Germany, Austria and Hungary. Two other empires later on joined them named the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.
Allied Powers The alliance with Russia, France, and Britain. Italy and other countries joined them later on in 1915.
Trench Warfare To fight and get protection from an underground place. They were used to settle and help get ready for battle. Both Germans and the French created them.
“No Man’s-Land” An empty place between the enemies' shelter. This empty spot had holes and trees but nothing else. No one could go in there.
Stalemate When no side declares victory. No side moves because of them. They broke this in 1916 because each side had a huge attack on each other. About 1 million men died from this.
U-boats Were used to launch missiles to hit enemy ships. Germans made these submarines. This made a lot of people which soon made the U.S go into World War I.
Dogpile A disorderly heap of people formed around one person on whom the others jump.
Schenck vs. U.S 1917 Legal case, U.S. Supreme Court ruled on March 3, 1919, that the freedom of speech protection afforded in the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment could be restricted if the words spoken or printed represented to society, a clear and present danger.
