What was prohibition and how did it affect America in the 1920s? Outlawed the sale and distribution of alcohol. Led to illegal drinking, speakeasies and rise of organized crimes around the sale of illegal alcohol.
What were the bad decisions made by allies at the Paris Peace Conference that ended world war 1? Germany is solely punished, Germany had to pay millions in reparations that they could not afford, the German military was limited, Germany lost its industrial lands to the allies.
Why did President Harding support the Red Scare during the 1920s? He worried communism would spread through the US through increased labor union activity.
What were the effects of the Harlem Rennaissance? African Americans found a new pride and confidence in their culture achievements and heritage.
Who were the different groups who opposed the Treaty of Versailles and what were their views? Reservationists: opposed the treaty unless the treaty was more specific and less vague Irreconcilables: opposed any treaty with a league of nations.
How did urbanization effect the Urban Worker In the 1920s? With rising salaries and set workday hours, workers had more money and evenings free to spend it. This led to diverse culture in urban areas and the rise of theater and sport.
What were the main issues on the American Homefront during world war 1? Increased taxations to pay for the war, the draft of young men to the military, organizing the economy to support the war, and encouraging Americans through propaganda to help.
What was the Harlem Renaissance? This was a gathering of African Americans in the Harlem area of NYC to pursue the flowering of culture in their community through art, literature and music.
Explain the causes of world war 1? The race for colonies in Africa and Asia among Europeans, a rising militarism in Europe, and a system of alliances, secret and public, between different European's countries and people.
What were the goals of President Wilsons war industries board during world war 1? To regulate industries related to the war to make sure that the war effort was put first. It tried to keep prices low and dictate what products needed to be produced for the war effort.
Why were leisure pursuits such as sports, movies, and theater so popular during the 1920s? People in cities had more income to spend with rising salaries in the 1920s. The automobile allowed people to be more mobile and do more things for fun.
What were the major themes coming out of the Harlem Renaissance? An appreciation of the African American in art, literature, and music, black empowerment, black pride in their cultural achievements, the blues, African American spirituals.
What was the world war 1 battlefield like? Miles of trenches and barbed wire around an area called "no man's land" where there were no trees anymore and just flat devastated land from highly destructive land.
Explain the presidency of Calvin Coolidge? He cleaned up Harding's corruption, allowed for the rebirth of big business, rejected social reform, and was president for most of the roaring's 20s.
What did Langston Hughes do in the Harlem Renaissance? He was a writer who wrote about black experience and empowerment.
What were the reasons and effects of the Great Migration? African Americans left the South with its segregation and Jim Crow laws, moved North and West for new opportunity.
How was the role of women changing of the 1920s? Women were working outside of the house, and in new + different occupations, women had the right to vote + better laws

What was the "new woman" of the 1920s? She was liberated. She wore short hair, and dresses. Danced the jitterbug. She could smoke, drink and go out of the town.
