The Bill of Rights
| Term | Definition |

| bail | money or property given to the court to hold until an accused person appears at trial |
| Bill of Rights | a formal listing of the basic rights of people in the United States |
| civil case | court case involving a dispute or disagreement between people or businesses |
| compensation | payment given to someone to offset or make up for a loss or injury |
| criminal case | court case involving a crime committed |
| defendant | a person who is required to defend himself or herself in a legal action, like an accused person put on trial for a crime |
| deprived | to withhold or take away something |
| double jeopardy | putting a person on trial more than once for the same crime |
| due process | the concept that the government must follow clear rules and act reasonably as it carries out the law |
| grand jury | a group of citizens who hear the government's evidence and decide whether a trial is justified |
| impartial | not prejudiced or biased against the defendant |
| jury trial | a trial in court involving a jury |
| Miranda warning | rights that every person is entitled to when detained by police, listed for the accused person at time of arrest |
| prosecutor | a person accusing or suing a defendant in court |
| self-incrimination | giving testimony that can be used against oneself |
| warrant | an order from a judge that allows police or other officials to take a certain action, such as searching or confiscating someone’s property |
