| Performance goal | performers compare their performance against what they have already done. No comparison with other performers | Better for beginners |
| Outcome goals | Focus on end result, for example winning | More appropriate for elite or experienced performers |
| Specific | Specific to the demands of the sport/muscles used/movements involved | |
| Measurable | Must be possible to measure whether it has been achieved | |
| Accepted | Must be accepted/agreed by the performer and coach if they have one. | |
| Realistic | Must be possible to complete the goal | |
| Time-bound | Must be set over a set period of time | |
| Goal setting | Gives performers a target to aspire to and helps to prepare mentally and physically | Used to provide motivation |
