Unit 4 - Skill classification
| Term | Definition | |

| Skill | A learnt action/behaviour | Intention of bringing about predetermined results with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy |
| Basic Skill | Few decisions to be made | Tend to be taught to beginners & can be learnt fairly quickly |
| Complex skill | Lots of decisions to be made | Can take time to master |
| Open Skill | Unstable environment & often externally paced | The way you do the skill is affected by people around you |
| Closed skill | Stable environment & typically self paced | Done the same way every time as not affected by the environment |
| Self paced skill | The start of the movement is controlled by the performer | E.g choosing when to start your run up when doing long jump. |
| Externally paced skill | The start of the movement is controlled by external factors | The speed or pace of movement is controlled by external factors |
| Gross skill | Involves big movements of the body & large muscle groups | Tend not to rely on accuracy and precision |
| Fine skill | Involves small, precise movements and small muscle groups | Tend to involve precision and accuracy |
| Ability | Inherited from parents | Stable traits that determine an individual's potential to learn or acquire skills |
