Lend-Lease Act | a law that allowed the U.S. to supply ships to Britain in exchange for leases of naval bases |
appeasement | giving in to an aggressor to avoid conflict |
Treaty of Versailles | punished Germany harshly at the end of WWI by requiring reparations be paid and blaming Germany for the war |
imperialism | when a strong country dominates a weaker country politically, economically and/or culturally |
militarism | building up a nation's military forces |
Munich Pact | an agreement made by Britain and France with Hitler to allow Germany to take over the Sudetenland in order to avoid war |
fascism | a political system that requires an emphasis on national pride, traditions and racial purity |
Neutrality Acts | prevented the U.S. from providing war materials to nations at war |
communism | a form of government in which the government controls the economy |
Non-Aggression Pact | agreement between the USSR and Germany that the Soviets would not stop the invasion of Poland by Germany and that the territory would be divided between them |
Winston Churchill | British Prime Minister during WWI who was critical of appeasement and led the country through the Battle of Britain |
Adolf Hitler | German chancellor who controlled the country through fascism and racist policies in order to form a third Reich |
Franklin Roosevelt | American president who began to move the country away from isolationism in order to help the Allies |
Hideki Tojo | leader of Japanese military |
Dwight Eisenhower | Allied commander in Europe |
Harry Truman | American president who made the decision to end the war against Japan by using the atomic bomb |
Joseph Stalin | Soviet leader who signed a non-aggression pact with Germany but later joined the Allies |
Hirohito | emperor of Japan |
Douglas MaCarthur | Commander of American forces in the Pacific |
Benito Mussolini | the father of fascism and leader of Italy during WWII |
