Founding Fathers Men who shaped and wrote America's founding documents
Natural Rights Rights implied by nature or given by God that no individual or government can deny
Ratify To formally approve or confirm.
Bill of RIghts Ten amendments added to the US Constitution in 1791.
First Amendment Protects freedom of speech, press, the right to assemble ad the right to ask government to address grievances
Second Amendment Protects the right to own firearms.
Fourth Amendment Protects against unreasonable searches and seizures of people and their possessions
Sixth Amendment Guarantees right of a speedy and public trial before an impartial jury
The Spanish-American War 1898- The US became an imperial power by defeating Spain and acquiring her oversees territories.
World War I 1914-1918 - Unwillingly drawn into war, America emerged as a world leader.
The Great Depression begins 1929- The stock market's Great Crash of 1929 signaled a decade of economic struggle for the US.
World War II 1939-1945 - American economic and military might led the way in defeating the Axis powers and establishing the US as a true world superpower.
The Launch of Sputnik 1957- The Russians launched the first artificial satellite, igniting a space race with the US.
Assassination of President JFK 1963 - Assassinated in Dallas.
Assassination of Martin Luther King 1968- Marked the end of a period of unprecedented gains in civil rights for blacks and others.
US Moon Landing 1969- American Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the moon. The landing is a great US victory in the Cold War.
End of the Cold War 1991-The breakup of the Soviet Union signaled the victory of capitalism over communism.
Terrorists attack on World Trade Center and The Pentagon 2001 = America initiated a global war against terrorism after the worse terrorist attack in US History on Sept 11.
Election of President Obama 2008 - Barack Obama is the first African American elected to the office of the President of the United States.
Economy of Scale Ability to produce goods more cheaply using large manufacturing facilities.
Monopoly A company or individual that completely controls an industry
Philanthropy Practice of donating money for socially useful purposes.
Political Machine An informal political group that uses questionable means to exercise control.
Expansionism A national policy of expanding control over other territories
Isolationism A national policy of shunning engagement in world events.
Muckraker A journalist who exposes societal corruption and abuse
Progressivism A political movement that believed government should take a bigger role in solving the problems created by industrialization and urbanization
Bootleggers People who legally manufactured and sold alcohol during prohibition.
Eugenics A pseudoscience dealing with selection of hereditary traits to improve breed or race.
Nativism A prejudice favoring native-born people over immigrants.
Anti-semitism Discrimination or prejudice against Jews
Atrocity An act of extreme cruelty committed during war time.
Fascism Governmental system led by a dictator who emphasizes aggressive nationalism
Contaiment U.S. Government policy against further spread of communism.
Domino Effect A theory that the fall of one country to communism could lead to the fall of other countries.
Segregation The practice of separating or isolating a race or class of people
Conservatism A political philosophy advocating preservation of what is best about society.
Detente A relaxing of tensions between adversaries
Embargo The prohibition of commercial transactions
Deescalate To relieve tension or reduce in magnitude
Ethnic Cleansing The removal of an ethnic group within society by forced immigration of genocide
Storm Surge Sea water forced inland during a violent storm such as a hurricane
