| Shia | Islamic belief that the true interpretation of Islamic teaching can only can only come from certain religious and political leaders. |
| Sunni | the Islamic belief that the majority of the community interprets Islamic teachings. |
| OPEC | an international organization whose members work to influence the price of oil on world markets by controlling the supply |
| embargo | a limit on trade |
| shah | the Persian word for king |
| revolution | a drastic change in a country's government and way of life. |
| theocracy | a government ruled by religious leaders. |
