| Columbian Exchange | the movement of people, plants, animals, and germs across the Atlantic Ocean |
| Christopher Columbus | an Italian sea captain and explorer. Sailing under the flag of Spain, he reached the Americas in 1492 in search of a sea route to Asia |
| King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella | The king and queen of Spain who paid for Christopher Columbus's voyages to the Americas |
| conquistador | the Spanish conquerors who first came to the Americas in the 1500s |
| Moctezuma II | Aztec emperor defeated by the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortes in 1520 |
| Hernando Cortes | A Spanish conquistador who defeated the Aztecs in 1521 and founded Mexico City |
| New Spain | Colonial lands held by Spain. It included what is now parts of the US, Mexico, and Central America |
| Mexico City | Capital and largest city in Mexica. The former site of Tenochtitlan |
| encomienda | a very large piece of land in New Spain given by the Spanish government to certain individuals. (Similar to a plantation) |
| missionary | a person who teaches their religion to others with different beliefs, often in another country |
| Dona Marina | Aztec princess who aided Cortes in his conquest of Tenochtitlan |
| Bartolome De Las Casas | Roman Catholic missionary from Spain who opposed the mistreatment of Natives in New Spain |
| Yanga | Leader of a slave revolt in New Spain in 1609 |
