Moctezuma II Aztec emperor defeated by the Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortes in 1520
Hernando Cortes A Spanish conquistador who defeated the Aztecs in 1521 and founded Mexico City
New Spain Colonial lands held by Spain. It included what is now parts of the US, Mexico, and Central America
Mexico City Capital and largest city in Mexica. The former site of Tenochtitlan
encomienda a very large piece of land in New Spain given by the Spanish government to certain individuals. (Similar to a plantation)
missionary a person who teaches their religion to others with different beliefs, often in another country
Dona Marina Aztec princess who aided Cortes in his conquest of Tenochtitlan
